The more I look into Church history, the more astonishing it is that the Mesoamerican theory ever got off the ground, let alone dominated thinking among LDS scholars. Church media, manuals, and pageants all depict a Mesoamerican setting. It's no wonder so many people are confused when they compare what Joseph, Oliver and David Whitmer said with what the Church seems to be saying today.
